Your heart is the hardest working organ in your body. It never takes a rest and it works 24/7 for as long as you live, through millions of beats during your lifetime. Even your brain rests, but the heart never does (thankfully!). To function properly your heart requires a constant supply of nutrients – think of them as fuel for an engine. The main source of these nutrients is your diet – what you eat. But if you don’t eat a fully balanced diet, then all of your body can suffer, but especially your heart.
Your diet can be supplemented daily with all-natural formulations of critical nutrients and vitamins to replace any deficiencies that your diet lacks. These supplements will ensure the balance of nutrients your body, and your heart, need to function properly and maintain best health for longevity and vitality.
Dr. Stephen Sinatra, M.D. is an award-winning and respected cardiologist, researcher, author and teacher. His multidisciplinary approach to better health uses the best of both conventional and alternative medicines. Not only does he treat patients with prescribed pharmaceutical drugs and state-of-the-art medical techniques, but he also recommends mind-body activities designed to reduce stress and anxiety, in combination with all-natural nutritional therapies (supplements and vitamins) that promote and enhance cellular metabolism and delay aging. He describes himself as an “integrative cardiologist.”
Dr. Sinatra recommends the following tips for keeping your heart healthy:
- Eat a modified Mediterranean diet. This includes “healthy” fats and moderate protein. This diet should be rich in alpha-linolenic acid and omega-3 fatty oils, which help prevent blood clotting and cholesterol buildup, as well as reduce blood pressure.
- Increase your level of fitness. Pick an exercise and stick with it. Exercise supports your cardiovascular system and not only brings fresh and vital nutrients (fuel) to your heart and lungs, but also efficiently removes waste products from these organ’s cellular metabolism.
- Join a cardiac rehabilitation program if you’ve had heart problems.
- Reduce stress in your life. Try yoga, massage, prayer, deep breathing and other strategies to accomplish this.
- Take a daily multivitamin that has carotenoids, flavenoids, vitamins C, E, and B, selenium and cardiac supporting herbs.
- Take Coenzyme Q10. It is one of the best supplements for the support of heart health. Dr. Sinatra prefers water soluble CoQ10 over other brands.
- Take L-Carnitine. It’s a nutrient that preserves heart health. Dr. Sinatra recommends 500 mg to 2 grams a day.
- Take 500 mg daily of magnesium and 1,000 mg daily of calcium. Both promote healthy blood pressure and help regulate heart health.
- Ensure that you have a source of fish oil in your diet. Fish oil is one of the best sources of healthy fat. To intake fish oil you can eat oily fish (like salmon or mackerel) twice a week, or you can take daily supplements of purified all-natural fish oil.
- Do not smoke, or stop smoking if you do.
- L-arginine improves blood flow to the heart. Take 2 to 4 grams before bed.
- Taurine has been shown to boost the electrical activity within the heart and promote the strength of the heart’s contractions. Ensure that Taurine is in your diet.
- Nattokinase is effective in breaking down fibrin, which helps blood flow freely. Also, make sure that you have this in your diet.
Dr. Sinatra’s top recommended daily supplement for heart health is Omega Q Plus. This is a product that combines L-Carnitine with a very high-quality form of coenzyme Q10. L-Carnitine and CoQ10 together will give you an enormous surge in energy and provide long-term support to maintain a healthy heart.
